toes! pretty painted toes! freelance Project
A collaborative project done with author Victoria NaBozny Mayhugh. 36 Illustrations revolving around Emma, the little girl, and her dog Rennie with the addition of 4 feline and 4 other dog characters. The color palette was limited to a bright palette, even the darker settings refused to lose the bold color. The author wanted consistency but organic, hand drawn lines and bold outlines.
Sketches and character design:
Each dog had a specific breed and color listed by the author. Each character had a detailed description provided that I turned into visual illustrations. The conceptual designs took the bulk of the design process. Once approved, creating the final visuals was the least time consuming.
Promotion and classroom read aloud:
I took a copy of Toes! Pretty Painted Toes! Into classrooms across the Midwest. I would present students with coloring pages and a read aloud for the younger classes. For older classes (3rd-6th grade) I gave a presentation on art and design careers in the “big kid world” emphasizing that the creative field has many avenues to explore, pushing the boundaries of what it means to be an artist.
